When it comes to built-in seating, window benches, or banquettes, nothing finishes the space like a perfectly sized cushion. But before you pick fabrics or foam, there’s one step that makes or breaks the final result – getting the right measurements.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how to measure for custom bench cushions so your order fits flawlessly and looks professionally tailored.

Why Accurate Measurements Matter

Unlike store-bought cushions, custom bench cushions are made to your exact specs. That means:

  • No shifting or overhang

  • Clean edges and corners

  • Tailored comfort and visual balance

Getting your measurements right is the foundation of a cushion that looks built-in, not added-on.

What You’ll Need

  • A steel tape measure (not fabric)

  • A notepad or printable worksheet

  • Pencil or pen

  • A level (optional for uneven surfaces)

  • A phone to take photos (helpful for templates)

How to measure for custom bench cushions

Step 1 – Measure Width (Side to Side)

Measure the full length of the bench from one side to the other, in inches. Take your measurement at the front and back of the bench to confirm it’s consistent.

Tip: If your bench has sidewalls or arms, measure inside edge to inside edge.

Step 2 – Measure Depth (Front to Back)

Measure from the very front of the bench to the wall or backrest. Do this in a few places in case the depth varies.

Tip: For built-ins with a slight angle or curve, use the shallowest measurement for a snug fit.

Step 3 – Measure Thickness (Height)

Decide how thick you want your cushion to be – standard thickness ranges from 2” to 4”. If your seat height is low, opt for a slimmer cushion. For deeper seats or added comfort, go with 3” or 4”.

Tip: Keep clearance in mind if the cushion is near a window ledge or cabinet.

Step 4 – Check for Corners or Curves

If your bench has:

  • Rounded corners – trace the corner onto paper and send it to your cushion maker

  • Angled sides or curves – take multiple depth measurements and create a template

Tip: A paper or cardboard template is often the best way to ensure accuracy for complex shapes.

Step 5 – Note Special Details

Before you submit your measurements, make notes of:

  • Whether you want the cushion to sit flush or inset

  • If the cushion should include ties, zippers, or piping

  • Any slope or dip in the seat base

The more details you provide, the more precisely your cushion will fit
